Behavioral Economics

Dr. Lois Vitt will present this 90 minute session on behalf of the Military Families Learning Network.
The web conference, “Ferryboat Captains and the Case for Behavioral Strategies in Teaching Financial Decision-Making,” will give conference participants tools that can help their clients and other learners—and couples—make more self-enhancing spending, saving and investing decisions. Using research from behavioral finance, Dr. Lois Vitt identifies and contrasts the social factors that shape and influence everyone’s financial behaviors and choices. In contexts unique to military service members and their families, she examines the concept of feeling “entitled” to spend money, to buy unaffordable items, and act out over money issues despite knowing better. She also tackles the psychology of guilt in its many guises that interferes with clear-headed decision-making. Guilty feelings can trigger reactionary financial decisions that sabotage even the best personal relationships and spoil chances for building one’s future financial security. She introduces webinar participants to ideas and resources that can help calm already anxiety-producing situations of deployment, homecoming, and beyond.
Lois A. Vitt, Ph.D is the Founding Director of the Institute for Socio-Financial Studies (ISFS). She is an author, educator, and researcher in behavioral finance, consumer financial decisions, and the finances of aging and retirement. Prior to founding ISFS, Dr. Vitt was an executive in financial firms and a government official. She earned an Executive MBA at Pace University in New York and her Ph.D. in sociology and social psychology at American University in Washington, DC.
Dr. Vitt is the author of books and articles on the psychology of consumer financial decisions, and she has given talks about the social effects of consumer finances and education before audiences around the world. She is Editor-in-Chief of the 2-Volume, Encyclopedia of Retirement and Finance (Greenwood Publishing Grouup, 2003).
Dr. Vitt has been featured at NPR, Oprah and Friends, and MarketWatch, and in the following selected publications, Cosmopolitan, Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, New York Times, Barron’s, Realtor Magazine, Chicago Tribune, Boston Globe, Toronto Globe and Mail, San Francisco Chronicle, LA Times, San Diego Union-Tribune, HousingPredictor.com, Women and Health, and AARP Magazine.
