Followup question - We are planning our pollinator garden - it is small space so is it better to have a wide variety of plants or better to concentrate on a species provider plant system to support 1 or 2 pollinator species throughout its life cycle?

Given that you have a small area and children involved, I think it may be most satisfying to plant a variety of plant material (in clumps as possible) to attract a variety of pollinators. Targeting a few specific plants to specific pollinators may be difficult unless you already have a good idea which insects you're trying to attract. Picking flowers with a long bloom time will add to the potential diversity of garden visitors, and the children will enjoy a garden with many flowers and an array of bees, butterflies and other garden visitors. I think it's great that you're planting for pollinators, and involving children as well! Good luck! -Denise Ellsworth Program Director, Honey Bee and Native Pollinator Education OSU Department of Entomology
