Engaging Teens & Older Youth

Does your 4-H program struggle to keep 4-H teens and older youth involved? Are you looking for ways to keep teenagers interested and active in 4-H? The 2013-2014 North Central Regional Volunteer e-Forum’s second session has strategies to increase engagement as well as data on the benefits of 4-H leadership activities for youth. Youth leadership can be an important factor in growing and sustaining strong 4-H programs, but how much do you know about the positive impacts of leadership activities on youth? “The 2011 Wisconsin 4-H Youth Development leadership study found that participation in leadership activities strengthens youth skills like public speaking and communication, teamwork and conflict resolution that are increasingly important to employers,” says Kandi O’Neil, volunteer specialist with Wisconsin 4-H Youth Development/University of Wisconsin. Kandi will present this program along with youth development colleagues from the University of Minnesota and North Dakota State University. Volunteers are invited to tune into this session of the 2013-2014 NCRV e-Forum with Becky Harrington, University of Minnesota; Kandi O’Neil, University of Wisconsin; Brenda Shafer, University of Minnesota; and Rachelle Vettern, North Dakota State University. The program can be viewed at https://connect.msu.edu/cyi/ at 8:00 p.m Eastern (7:00PM Central, and 6:00PM Mountain). Sessions will be 90 minutes in length. The NCRV e-Forum is a chance to watch presentations live, send questions to the experts and participate in discussions with adult leaders from around the region. Recordings will be housed both on learn.extension.org and on the North Central Region Volunteer e-Forum website: http://www.uwex.edu/ces/4h/ncrvd/eForum2013.cfm. For more information on this session and other parts of the 2013-2014 North Central Regional Volunteer e-Forum, contact Molly Frendo at frendo@anr.msu.edu or 517-432-7606.
