Managing natural resources with the challenge of climate change

Danielle Shannon is a climate outreach and online development specialist for the Northern Institute of Applied Climate Science and coordinator of the USDA Northern Forests Climate Sub Hub.

This talk will introduce the Northern Institute of Applied Climate Science (NIACS) and share experiences assisting land managers to develop and implement conservation and management actions to help ecosystems respond to climate change. Specifically, experiences and related resources have come from 6 years of work reaching out to the forest community through climate and adaptation education, seminars and workshops; major efforts such as - supporting ecosystem modeling, bringing stakeholders, experts, and scientists together to assess ecosystem vulnerability in multiple regions; and most importantly guiding landowners through a structured adaptive management approach to climate adaptation in a workbook style, resulting in adaptation implementation projects - there are currently over 60 demonstration projects on the ground in its footprint. Each project often serves a unique user group, yet the mission as whole is the same - NIACS strives to foster communication between managers, scientists, policy-makers and other partners, to get stuff done.
