Presenter: Marianne Smith Edge, MS, RD, LD, FADA is Senior Vice President, Nutrition and Food Safety for the International Food Information Council (IFIC) in Washington, DC, a nonprofit organization that communicates sound, science-based information on nutrition and food safety to health professionals, educators, government officials, journalists and consumers.

Webinar Objectives
• Associate insights from the 2012 IFIC Foundation Food & Health Survey with challenges that can hinder families from preventing overweight and obesity and achieving a healthy weight.
• Identify multiple perceived barriers and motivators parents face when attempting to achieve calorie and energy balance for themselves and their families.
• Acquire best practices and incorporate consumer-tested messages for communicating about calorie balance developed from a three-phase consumer research project.

The 2012 Food and Health Survey: Consumer Attitudes toward Food Safety, Nutrition and Health, commissioned by the International Food Information Council Foundation, is the seventh annual national quantitative study designed to understand Americans' perceptions and behavior about important food safety, nutrition, and health related topics.

The research provides valuable insights on how Americans view their own diets, their efforts to improve them, how they balance diet and exercise, and their actions when it comes to food safety practices.

The Dietary Guidance Alliance 2010 research objectives:
• Gather parents’ familiarity with and gaps in knowledge regarding the core concepts of achieving energy balance, recognizing the impact of portion size, making nutrient-rich choices within the context of individual calorie needs and enjoying higher-calorie foods within the context of individual calorie needs
• Identify the behaviors, motivators and mindsets that lead to successful action among consumers as well as the perceived barriers that prevent consumers form being successful
• Craft communications that inspire action among consumers
