Pinterest for CoPs, County Agents, Specialists, and Outreach Educators

Need a beginner session? Check out this webinar FIRST http://learn.extension.org/events/448

Pinterest is a relatively new social networking tool that creates social networks around a users "interests". There is certainly a high level of use for personal "pinning" but there is also a potential to use this tool for public outreach and education. This session will focus on how Cooperative Extension (and other outreach and education oriented organizations) can use Pinterest to provide a platform for guiding audiences to meaningful information or resources. How can we use this very social, very visual platform to highlight information that meets the mission of CES? Pinterest has some significant ways to help us serve our clients, to organize and collect scholarly information, and to help serve the public through collective curating

Who should attend? County Extension Agents, eXtension CoP members, Outreach Educators, faculty, staff, and teachers; and anyone who is interested in learning how to pin for education outreach.

Another good article to read from Copyblogger - Is Pinterest Traffic Worthless? http://www.copyblogger.com/pinterest-analytics/ Excellent tips stressing it isn't about getting pinned, it's about what the user does when they come to your site from a Pin. Do you engage them, do they spend time on your site, do you drive them to resources? It is very much inline with asking yourself what is the goal with your Pinterest traffic besides getting a pin? Two great points: " You need to have specific goals for using the traffic from Pinterest. Work with the traffic as you would from any source — driving it to landing pages and through a conversion path. "

Excellent tips, especially on copyright issues and best practices. Love the suggestion to network with users who have repinned from your boards, been doing that myself. www.pinterest.com/uafextension

Sorry I missed the presentation. Looking forward to seeing the recording. Don't know if you all talked about this in the session but, here's how to track your website's content on Pinterest: http://mashable.com/2012/03/14/pinterest-track-content/ Here's our site as an example: http://http://pinterest.com/source/extension.oregonstate.edu/

This is very cool, but I'm trying to figure out the advantage of doing this in Pinterest vs a YouTube page where the videos already reside? What advantages would Pinterest give you?

Kevin, off the top of my head, I'd say Pinterest may provide an advantage in frictionless sharing over YouTube. I'm not sure how many people are using YouTube as a social tool. it certainly has that capability, but I don't run across many people who monitor their YouTube presence for shared content like they do Facebook, Twitter or Pinterest. If users see the pin of your video on their Pinterest wall, they can easily re-pin it to share it with others. I know, they could do that in YouTube as well. I'm just not sure most people use YouTube in that way.

I find the YouTube recommended videos incredibly interesting. Google obviously knows a lot about me. Not sure how a YouTube _like_ compares to a pin in terms of impact. Someone asked the question yesterday about how pins help with search discovery. That could be a great topic for a follow-on session. Great stuff btw!

The copyright issues for Pinterest are significant. They post thumbnails of images, but then display the full images on their site. Google was challenged on this and won because they weren't displaying the full image. I can't imagine that Pinterest won't have to make some changes. Their terms of use indicate that you are responsible for obtaining the rights to post what you do. I'm not sure this will stand-up in court, but they are clearly trying to make you the user responsible for any violation of copyright.

Thanks for the session. Just checked OSU Extension's most pinned and two of the most popular photos we do NOT hold the copyright for! We received permission to use in our 2002 BP (Before Pinterest) articles.
