Following wildfire, it is critical to promptly contain existing weed infestations and monitor for new weeds that may have been dispersed to the area through firefighting activities.
Jane Mangold, MSU Extension Rangeland Weed Specialist, will present the last session of the MSU Extension Fire and Drought Webinar Series on Sept 13 at 9:30 a.m. Designed for ranchers, county weed coordinators, Extension Ag agents and state and public land agencies, “Managing Weeds After Wildfire,” will provide some guidelines for controlling re-appearing weeds and monitoring for new invaders. Noting that weeds can really take off following wildfire, Mangold states, “understanding a few basic ideas about weed biology and its response to fires can really help you stop weeds from expanding.” In fact, she says, “fire can even provide an opportunity for improving the outcome of weed control efforts.”
Mangold’s presentation is free and open to the public. The entire MSU Extension Wildfire and Drought Webinar Series is archived and can be found at http://www.msuextension.org/wildfire.
