Using Social Media in Disaster Recovery: Missouri Examples

Social media has a niche area of informing people during and after a disaster. The first successful large scale use of social media after a disaster was in Joplin after an F5 tornado totally destroyed 1/3 of the city of Joplin on May 22, 2011. MU Extension assisted in developing the Facebook page joplintornadoinfo along with dedicated volunteers. This same model was then used as flooding approached northwest MO with MoFloodInfo and when Branson was hit on leap day 2012 (there are still over 17,000 followers of BransonTornadoInfo). This presentation will share the successes of these sites. Participants can also get a copy of “Using Social Media in Disaster Recovery.” Presentation available online at http://www.slideshare.net/MUExtension417/social-media-in-a-disaster
