Dr. Ben Chapman is a food safety extension specialist at North Carolina State University with experience in disaster and crisis management and communication. Ben will share his experiences in development and delivery of messages around natural disaster situations for various audiences including field faculty, consumers, volunteers and food industry members - each of which have different concerns associated with events.
The seminar will focus on conveying proactive and reactive food safety risk messages during a power outage, communicating risks of eating produce grown in flooded gardens and how to engage food handlers in risk-reduction practices during events. As an avid blogger and tweeter, Chapman will also talk about his experiences in utilizing social media to extend the reach of extension materials during disasters, highlighting engaging with media, public health colleagues and the public.
